2、sfatheroriginatedfromPolandandhispolyglotmotherfromCroatia.HegrewupinPolandandreceivedhisuniversitydegreefromWarsawAgriculturalUniversityinWarsawin1938.In1939hefledfromtheNaziinvasionofPolandwithhisPolishwifeIrenetoRomaniawherebothwerevviInMemoriaminterred.MostofhisfamilyperishedintheHolocaust
3、.In1947KarlandIreneemigratedtotheUnitedStateswhereKarlreceivedhisPh.D.atColumbiaUniversityin1949.HestartedhisscientificcareeratRockefellerUniversityinNewYorkworkingoninsect-transmittedplantviruses,atopichecontinuedthroughouthislife.From1961to1973hewasaProgramDirectorofVirologyattheBoyceThompso
4、nInstituteinIthaca,NY,andthenmovedtotheWaksmanInstituteofMicrobiologyatRutgersUniversity,NewJerseyin1974.In1984hejoinedtheEntomologyDepartmentatRutgerswhichremainedhisscientifichome.Hepioneeredworkoninsect-transmittedplantvirusesincludingmicroinjectionintovectorsaswellasinsecttissueculturetoma
5、kemajoradvancesinourunderstandingofthereplicationofplantpathogensininsectvectorsandtheinteractionbetweeninsects,viruses,andplants.Amongnumerousotherdistinctions,in1980KarlreceivedtheWolfPrizeinAgriculture,consideredthe“AgricultureNobelPrize,”forhisworkoninsectvectorsandplantpathogens.Karlhasau
6、thoredorcoauthoredanimpressivenumberofscien-tificpapers(>800)andbooks(>100).Since1973KarlhasservedasaserialeditorforAdvancesinVirusResearch,theoldestreviewseriesinvirology.Karllivedtoseehisautobiographicalbook“TheThornyRoadtoSuccess:AMemoir”publishedrecently,alastingtestimonyofhislifeinthecont
7、extofthe20thandearly21stcenturies.Karlwasarolemodelinhisperseveranceandhisdedicationtoandenthusiasmforscience.TogetherwithFredMurphyandAaronShatkin,KarlsignificantlyinfluencedAdvancesinVirusResearch,whichretainsitsplaceamongthepremiervi
