4、sks.Reducingdistractionimprovedtheperformanceofolderadultswhilehavinglittleornoeffectonyoungeradults,suggestingthattheabilitytolimitattentionalaccesstotask-relevantinformationcanaffectperformanceontestsdesignedtomeasureprocessingspeed.DistractionandSpeed27DistractionandProc

5、essingSpeedTheideathat“fasterisbetter”ispowerfulincars,computing,andcognitivepsychology.Groupdifferences,especiallyagedifferences,areoftenascribedtothebetter-performinggroup’sfasterprocessing.Wereporttwostudiesthatassessedthecontributionofanattentional-perceptualvariable,vi

6、sualdistraction,indeterminingagedifferencesinclassicspeedtasks.Manystandardspeedtestsuseitemsthatareindividuallysimple,butfitmanysuchitemsontoasinglepage,resultinginacluttered,potentiallydistractingdisplay.Manygroupsthoughttohavedeficitsinprocessingspeedalsohavedifficulties
