3、ted.Mousehepatitisvirus(MHVs)wasfoundtobeantigenieallyrelatedtoanumberofhumantypesofcoronavirus.Difficultieswereencounteredintheinvestigationofpairedhumanseraindemonstratingthespecificityofantibodyrises,placingdoubtonthevaluesofsomeserologicalstudies.Thesignificanceoftheseinterrelationshipsi
4、sdiscussedinthelightofotherinvestigations.1.IntroductionAnewgroupofviruseshasbeenisolatedfromcasesofupperrespiratorydiseaseinman.Theseviruseshaveacommonmorphologywiththatofthevirusesofavianinfectiousbronchitis(BE~RYetal.,1964)andmousehepatitis(TYRRELLandALMEIDA,1967).Theseagentsareetherandac
5、id-labile,probablycontainRNAandarecomposedofpleomorphicbodies80--150m~indiameterwhich,bynegativestaining,areseentobesurroundedbyafringeofclub-shapedpro-jectionsabout15m~deep.Theresemblanceofthisfringetoacrownhasresultedinthename"Coronaviruses"beingproposedforthegroup(NATURE,1968).Manyisolati
6、onshavebeenmadeofavianinfectiousbronchitis(AIB)andsero-logicallythesefallintoseveralserologicaltypesonthebasisofneutralizationtests(ESTOLA,1966).Thereareatleastthreeserologicaltypesofmousehepatitisvirus(MttV)(GL]~D~/LL,1961).Someoftheisolationsofcoronavirusesfrommanhavebeenmadeinhumanembryod
7、iploidlungcellstrains(ttDCS).Theseisolateshaveallcross-reactedcompletelyinneutralizationtestswithantiseratotheproto-typestrain229EisolatedbyttAMEin1962(HAMREandPROCK~OW,1966).OthervirusesofthisgroupwhicharepathogenictomanhavebeenisolatedinBRADBURNE
