3、witchisoncomparedtotheoffperiods,thehigherthepowersuppliedtotheloadis.ThePWMswitchingfrequencyhastobemuchfasterthanwhatwouldaffecttheload,whichistosaythedevicethatusesthepower.Typicallyswitchingshavetobedoneseveraltimesaminuteinanelectricstove,120Hzinalampdimmer,fromfewkilohertz(kHz)totensof
4、kHzforamotordriveandwellintothetensorhundredsofkHzinaudioamplifiersandcomputerpowersupplies.Thetermdutycycledescribestheproportionof'on'timetotheregularintervalor'period'oftime;alowdutycyclecorrespondstolowpower,becausethepowerisoffformostofthetime.Dutycycleisexpressedinpercent,100%beingfull
5、yon.ThemainadvantageofPWMisthatpowerlossintheswitchingdevicesisverylow.Whenaswitchisoffthereispracticallynocurrent,andwhenitison,thereisalmostnovoltagedropacrosstheswitch.Powerloss,beingtheproductofvoltageandcurrent,isthusinbothcasesclosetozero.PWMalsoworkswellwithdigitalcontrols,which,becau
6、seoftheiron/offnature,caneasilysettheneededdutycycle.PWMhasalsobeenusedincertaincommunicationsystemswhereitsdutycyclehasbeenusedtoconveyinformationoveracommunicationschannel.HistoryInthepast,whenonlypartialpowerwasneeded(suchasforasewingmachinemotor),arheostat(locatedinthesewingmachine'sfoot
7、pedal)connectedinserieswiththemotoradjustedtheamountofcurrentflowingthroughthemotor,butalsowastedpowerasheatintheresistorelement.Itwasaninefficientscheme,buttolerablebecausethetotalpowerwaslow.Thiswasoneofseveralmethodsofcontrollingpower.Therewereo
