2、aincontroversialdespitethevastamountsofworkdevotedtoinvestigatingcorrosioninconcrete-embeddedsteel.Specifically,thesereferto:1)therelativesignificanceofgalvanicmacrocouplesandcorrosionmicrocellsinreinforcedconcretestructures;2)themechanismbywhichreinforcemen
3、tscorrodeinanactivestate;3)thebestprotectivemethodsforpreventingorstoppingreinforcementcorrosion;4)thepossibilityofareliablepredictionoftheservicelifeofareinforcedconcretestructure;and5)thebestcorrosionmeasurementandcontrolmethods.Theresponsesprovidedaresupp
4、ortedbyexperimentalresults,mostofwhichwereobtainedbytheauthorsthemselves.1.INTRODUCTIONConcrete-embeddedsteelisknowntoremaininapassivestateundernormalconditionsasaresultofthehighlyalkalinepHofconcrete.Thepassivityofreinforcementsensuresunlimiteddurabilityofr
5、einforcedconcrete(1KC)structures.However,therearesomeexceptionalconditionsthatdisruptsteelpassivityandcausereinforcementstobecorrodedinanactivestate.Thishasraisedcontroversialinterpretations,someofwhichwerediscussedinPartIofthisseries[1].ThisPartIIanalysesth
6、oughfarfromexhaustively,other-totheauthorsmindsatleast-equallyinterestingissuesonwhichnogeneralconsensushasbeenreached.2.MATERIALSANDMETHODSThereaderisreferredtoPartIforadetaileddescriptionofthematerialsandmethodsusedinthiswork.Mostoftheexperimentalresultsdi
7、scussedhereinwereobtainedwiththesametypesofspecimensandslabs.Galvaniccouplesweredeterminedonspeciallydesignedspecimens,suchasthoseshowninFigs.1and2.Near-realconditionsweresimulatedbyusingabeamthatwas160cmlongand7x10cmincross-section.Thebeamwasmadefrom350kgce
