1、Chinese-EnglishTranslationofPublicSignsforTourismLeongKo,TheUniversityofQueenslandABSTRACTBilingualpublicsignsareextensivelyusedinChinese-speakingregionssuchasMainlandChina,TaiwanandHongKong.ThisarticleconcentratesonissuesrelatingtoChinesepublicsignsattouristattractionsand

2、theirtranslationintoEnglish.Basedonexamplescollectedfromthesethreeregions,itfindsthatChinesepublicsignsintouristareasconstituteaspecialgenreandtendtouseadescriptiveand/orfigurativelanguagestyletoconveyasimplemessage,whichcreateschallengesfortranslation.Thedataanalysisindic

3、atesthatthreetranslationstrategiesareemployedintranslatingpublicsigns—i.e.literaltranslation,semi-literalandsemi-adaptivetranslation,andfreeadaptation—andthatliteraltranslationisthemostcommonstrategy.Itisfoundthatallthreestrategieshavelimitationsinconveyingthemessagemeanin

4、gfullyandnaturally.Thearticleconcludesthattheuniquenatureofpublicsignsintouristareassuggestsaneedforfurtherinvestigationofthelanguagestylesusedinsuchsignsinbothlanguagesandthemostappropriatestrategiesfortheirtranslation.KEYWORDSPublicsign,bilingualsign,publicsigntranslatio
