1、Chinese-EnglishTranslationofPublicSignsforTourismLeongKo,TheUniversityofQueenslandABSTRACTBilingualpublicsignsareextensivelyusedinChinese-speakingregionssuchasMainlandChina,TaiwanandHongKong.ThisarticleconcentratesonissuesrelatingtoChinesepublicsignsatto
2、uristattractionsandtheirtranslationintoEnglish.Basedonexamplescollectedfromthesethreeregions,itfindsthatChinesepublicsignsintouristareasconstituteaspecialgenreandtendtouseadescriptiveand/orfigurativelanguagestyletoconveyasimplemessage,whichcreateschallen
3、gesfortranslation.Thedataanalysisindicatesthatthreetranslationstrategiesareemployedintranslatingpublicsigns—i.e.literaltranslation,semi-literalandsemi-adaptivetranslation,andfreeadaptation—andthatliteraltranslationisthemostcommonstrategy.Itisfoundthatall
4、threestrategieshavelimitationsinconveyingthemessagemeaningfullyandnaturally.Thearticleconcludesthattheuniquenatureofpublicsignsintouristareassuggestsaneedforfurtherinvestigationofthelanguagestylesusedinsuchsignsinbothlanguagesandthemostappropriatestrateg
