2、systemic-functionalgrammarhavebeenadopted.Howeverthethesisisadifferentapproachtomodalitywhichanalyzestheuseofmodalityinlinguisticcommunicationfromapragmaticperspective.ThetheoreticalbasisisVerschuren’sAdaptationtheory,whichdependsonageneralhypothesisthattheprocessofusinglanguageconsistsofcontin
3、uousmakingoflinguisticchoices,consciouslyorunconsciously,forlanguageinternalorlanguageexternalreasons.Theadaptationtheorybringsaboutthefollowingimplicationsforourstudyofmodalityfromapragmaticperspective:(1)TheuseofEnglishmodalityisaprocessofchoicemaking;(2)Thechoiceofaparticularmodaldeviceisare
4、sultofdynamiccontextualadaptation.(3)Modalchoicesareresultsofcontextualnegotiationandimplydifferentdegreesofmetapragmaticawareness.Thefocusofthisthesisisontheanalysisofinteradaptabilityofmodaldevicesandcontextualcorrelateswhilethedynamicnatureoftheadaptationandthemetapragmaticawarenessinvolvedi
5、ntheprocessofmeaningfulfunctioningarealsoanalyzedinthehopeofrevealingtheessenceoftheuseofmodalityinactualcommunication.Themethodwetakeinthepresentstudyisprimarilyaqualitativeone,andthedatacollectedincludenotonlywrittenbutalsospokendiscourses,takingintoconsiderationoftheeffectofnaturallanguageon
6、ourresearch.Insum,wehaveintegratedthesocial,culturalandcognitivefactorstoexplorethecontextualcorrelatestowhichthemodaldevicesadapt,andconductedageneralfunctionalapproach---thepragmaticperspectivetoEnglishmodality.WehopethattheanalysisoftheadaptabilityofEnglishmodaldevicesfromtheperspectiveofada
