2、aUndertheSupervisionofProfessorCaiPingChangsha,HunanMay,2013AbstractCulturaldefaultreferstotheabsenceoftheculturalbackgroundknowledgesharedbytheauthorandhisintendedreaders.Itresultsfromthetacitcognitionbetweentheauthorandtheintendedreaders.Whenwriting,forthesakeofeconomy,thesourcetextauthoro
3、ftenleavessomesemanticvacancies.Ontheotherhand,heassureshisintendedreadersoftheopportunitiestoparticipateactivelyandappreciatetheaestheticvalueofthework.Duringtheprocessofreading,thereaderisstimulatedtOrecalltherelativeculturalbackgroundknowledgetofillinthevacanciesleftbythesourcetextauthorS
4、Othathecanobtaincoherentunderstanding.However,thesourcetextauthorandthetargettextreaders,differingintheircognitiveenvironments,lackthecommonviewabouttheculturalbackgroundknowledge.Culturaldefaultconstantlyresultsinmisleadingthetranslatorsorthetargettextreaders,orevenbringingbarriersofunderst
5、anding.Therefore,itisregardedasagreatchallengeforthetranslatorstodealwiththetranslationofculturaldefault.Intranslation,thephenomenonofculturaldefaultinthesourcetextisoftenregardedtobeabarrierandscholarsstrivetofindagoodstrategyforit.Afteralongperiodofsearch,theyfocusontheargumentforadoptiono
6、fforeignizationordomestication.BasedonstudiesofNida’Sfunctionalequivalencetheory,thisthesisprobesintothetranslationofculturaldefault,andcorrespondinglyrecommendssomestrategiestOdealwiththeproblemsintranslationresultingfromtheculturaldefault.Thetraditionaltranslationtheoryfocusesonthecontente
