2、ecompetencehasgeneratedaconsiderableamountofdiscussionregardingthedifficultyoflearningit,thefeasibilityofteachingitandtheadequacyofteachingandlearningit.ThispaperfocusesonthedevelopmentofcommunicativecompetencethroughvariousmethodsinELT.Keywordscommunication;competence;ELTCommunicativec
3、ompetencehasbeenoneofthegreatkeywordsandbuzzwordsofEnglishlanguageteaching(ELT)formanyyears.Itstillis.Inrecentyears,therehasbeenacertainamountofcontroversyastowhattheconceptactuallycomprises,andwhetherallthat,forexample,studentshavetolearntodoistalk.Thenhowcantheconceptmeaningfullybeuse
4、datpresent?I.TheComponentsofCommunicativeCompetenceLongmanDictionaryofLanguageTeaching&AppliedLinguisticsdefinestheCommunicativeApproachorCommunicativeLanguageTeachingasanapproachtoforeignorsecondlanguageteachingwhichemphasizesthatthegoaloflanguagelearningiscommunicativecompetence
5、.TheconceptofcommunicativecompetencewasoriginallydevelopedthirtyyearsagobythesociolinguistHymes(1972),asaresponsetoperceivedlimitationsinChomskyscompetence/performancemodeloflanguage.Hymesarguedthataspeakercanbeabletoproducegrammaticalsentencesthatarecompletelyinappropriate.Incommunica
6、tivecompetence,heincludednotonlytheabilitytoformcorrectsentencesbuttousethematappropriatetimes.SinceHymesproposedtheideaintheearly1970s,ithasbeenexpandedconsiderably,andvarioustypesofcompetencieshavebeenproposed.Itwasfurtherdevelopedintheearly1980sbyCanaleandSwain.AccordingtoCanale(1983
