3、eedforanapproachthatcanstartfromagivenPLCprogram.Therefore,formalizationofPLCprogramsisatopicofcurrentresearch.Thepaperoutlinesare-engineeringapproachbasedontheformalizationofPLCprograms.Thetransformationintoavendorindependentformatandthevisualizationofthestru
4、ctureofPLCprogramsisidentifiedasanimportantintermediatestepinthisprocess.ItisshownhowXMLandcorrespondingtechnologiescanbeusedfortheformalizationandvisualizationofanexistingPLCprogram.1INTRODUCTIONProgrammableLogicControllers(PLCs)areaspecialtypeofcomputersthat
5、areusedinindustrialandsafetycriticalapplications.ThepurposeofaPLCistocontrolaparticularprocess,oracollectionofprocesses,byproducingelectricalcontrolsignalsinresponsetoelectricalprocess-relatedinputssignals.ThesystemscontrolledbyPLCsvarytremendously,withapplica
6、tionsinmanufacturing,chemicalprocesscontrol,machining,transportation,powerdistribution,andmanyotherfields.Automationapplicationscanrangeincomplexityfromasimplepaneltooperatethelightsandmotorizedwindowshadesinaconferenceroomtocompletelyautomatedmanufacturinglin
7、es.Withthewideningoftheirapplicationhorizon，PLCprogramsarebeingsubjecttoincreasedcomplexityandhighqualitydemandsespeciallyforsafety-criticalapplications.Thegrowingcomplexityoftheapplicationswithinthecomplianceoflimiteddevelopmenttimeaswellasthereusabilityofexi
