4、evelsabovethechemicalpotential,andformanyyearswasreferredtoasthe“Kosselstructure”nowitisknownasabsorptionedgeregion.Theoscillatorystructureextendingforhundredsofelectronvoltspasttheedgeswascalledthe“Kronigstructure”afterthescientist,RalphKronig,whoassignedthisstructuretothesinglesca

5、tteringoftheexcitedphotoelectronbyneighbouringatoms.ThisisnowcalledEXAFS.TheenergyregionofXANES(extendingoverarangeofabout100eV)betweentheedgeregionandtheEXAFSregionhasbeenassignedtomultiplescatteringresonances.Inthecaseoforganicmoleculesthisenergyregionhasbeenlatercallednear-edgeX-
