5、hnologicaladvances,asdonewdiscoverieswithoverarchingtheories.However,sinceabouttheturnofthecenturywearefacinganewkindof(r)evolu-tioninsciencethatisdrivennotprimarilybynewdiscoveries,theories,orfashions-butbytheunprecedentedavailabilityofdata,whichis“outthere”andh
6、asyettobeexplored.Thespectacularadvancesinthenaturalsciencesoverthepasthundredyearshavebeenbuiltinsignificantpartonthecapacitytocollectandanalyzedata.Sowhatisthedifferencenow?Mostofthetime,findingandgeneratingdatawasascientificenterprisebyitself,tightlyknittoengi
7、neeringandtechnologicaldevelopments-fromthetelescopetothemicroscope,fromtheparticleacceleratortothemainframecom-puter.Buttheseadvanceswerebasicallydrivenbyhypotheses-assumptionsabouttherealworldthatneededtobetested.Experiments,observationsandcomputersimula-tionsw
8、eregroundedinscientificreflectionaboutwhatshouldbeexplainedinarationalmanner,i.e.,theylargelyfollowedtheunderlyingscientifichypotheses.Thisiswhathaschangednow.
