4、lpenetratesbeneathitssurfaceandtravelsparalleltothecenterofrotation,asurfaceofrevolutionisproduced,andtheoperationiscalledturning.Ifahollowtubeismachinedontheinsideinasimilarmanner,theoperationiscalledboring.Producinganexternalconicalsurfaceuniformlyvaryingdiameteriscalledtape
5、rturning,ifthetoolpointtravelsinapathofvaryingradius,acontouredsurfacelikethatofabowlingpincanbeproduced;or,ifthepieceisshortenoughandthesupportissufficientlyrigid,acontouredsurfacecouldbeproducedbyfeedingashapedtoolnormaltotheaxisofrotation.Shorttaperedorcylindricalsurfacesco
6、uldalsobecontourformed.Flatorplanesurfacesarefrequentlyrequired.Theycanbegeneratedbyradialturningorfacing,inwhichthetoolpointmovesnormaltotheaxisofrotation.Inothercases,itismoreconvenienttoholdtheworkpiecesteadyandreciprocatethetoolacrossitinaseriesofstraight-linecutswithacros
7、swisefeedincrementbeforeeachcuttingstroke.Thisoperationiscalledplanningandiscarriedoutonashaper.Forlargerpiecesitiseasiertokeepthetoolstationaryanddrawtheworkpieceunderitasinplanning.Thetoolisfedateachreciprocation.Contouredsurfacescanbeproducedbyusingshapedtools.Multiple-edge
