3、omprisesapproximately520aminoacidresidues.WehavedeterminedthenucleotidesequenceofSlofsevenstrainsoftheMassachusetts(Mass)serotypeandthefirst337basesoftwoadditionalMassstrains.DespitethefactthatthestrainshadbeenisolatedoverthreedecadesinEuropeandtheU.S.A.ther
4、ewasonly4%baseand6%aminoacidvariationwithinthegroup.Nearlyonethirdofthe32aminoaciddifferencesinSlwereintwohypervariableregions(HVRs1and2)comprisingresidues38-51and99-115,identifiedbyNiestersetal.(1986),showingthatHVRs1and2areafeatureoftheMassserotype.Aminoac
5、idvariationwithinHVRs1and2was29%and40%respectively.Fivevaccinestrainscouldbedistinguishedfromeachotherbysequencingofthefirst337nucleotides.VariantsofM41whichresistedneutraliza-tionbytwomonoclonalantibodies(Al3andA38)hadthesame,singlebasechangeatposition134,r
