4、easeintheproductionofextracellularvirus.TheresultspresentedsupportoursuggestionthatBernevirusisarepresentativeofanewfamilyofanimalviruses.Recently,wereportedthepurificationandpartialcharacterizationofanewenvelopedRNAviruswhichhadbeenisolatedfromahorseinBerne,Switzerland.'Bernevirus'measur
5、es120to140nminitslargestdiameterandconsistsofapeplomer-bearingenvelopeandanelongatedcorewhichisbentintoanopentoruswithinthemembrane.Itscurvedshapeisapparentlymaintainedbythetightlyfittingenvelope;fromthin-sectionelectronmicroscopicimagesweconcludedthattheBernevirionhastheuniqueshapeofa(bi
6、concave)disc.Thecoreistubularinappearanceandshowsatransversestriationindicativeofahelicalnucleocapsidsymmetry.BerneviruspossessesanRNAgenome:itsgrowthisnotaffectedbyiododeoxyuridine(IUdR)underconditionswhereequineherpesvirusreplicationisinhibitedbymorethan3log10unitsofinfectivity(Weisseta
7、l.,1983).WehaveshownthatBernevirusisserologicallyunrelatedtoinfectiousbronchitis,mousehepatitis(MHV)andtransmissiblegastroenteritisviruseswhicharerepresentativesofthreeantigenicclustersofcoronaviruses(Weissetal.,1983).Itisconceivable,however,thatBerneviruscouldstill
