3、AMA).MAAappeared3hpost-infection,concurrentlywiththeappearanceofcytoplasmicantigens.Electronmicroscopicobservationsofcellculturesinfectedwitheithercoronavirusstrainandlabelledwiththeimmunoperoxidaseantibody(IPA)techniqueforMAAdetectionshowedthatMAAconsistedmainlyofa
4、stronglylabelled,discontinuous,brush-likelayerofamorphousmaterial,strictlyassociatedwiththeinfectedcellmembranelBylightmicroscopy,reactivityofMAAwithhomologousandheterologousimmuneserumwassimilartothatofantigensdetectedbyIPAinethanol-fixedinfectedcells.IPAandIFAMA,b
5、utnothaemagglutination-inhibiting(Hi)andneutralizing(Nt)antibody,werestronglydecreasedbyabsorptionofimmuneserawithtrypsin-treatedglutaraldehyde-fixedcellculturesinfectedwithhomologousvirus.MAAIgGantibodiesweredetectedbyIFAMAinbothhumanandanimalsera.Serafrominfantssh
6、owinganHIandNt,butnotanIPA,antibodyresponsetoHCVOC43werealsofreeofdetectableiFAMAantibodytoHCVOC43.Humancoronavirus(HCV)OC43causesupperrespiratorytractsyndromesinhumans(Mclntoshetal.,1967;Kayeetal.,1971;Bradburne&Somerset,1972);neonatalcalfdiarrhoeacoronavirus(NCDCV
7、)isamajorcauseofdiarrhoeainnewborncalves(Stairetal.,1972;Mebusetal.,1973).Thesetwocoronavirusstrainshavebeenshowntopossesscloseantigenicrelationships(Gernaetal.,1981).Recently,Robb&Bond(1979)reportedtheexpressionofmousehepatitisvirusantigensinplasmamembraneofinfecte
