2、ofGermany(Aeeepted22December1980)SUMMARYThemurinecoronavirusstrainsMHVJHM,MHV1,MHV2,MHV3andMHVA59weretestedfortheirneurovirulenceinweanlingrats.ThestrainJHMwasfoundtobehighlyneurovirulentforweanlingrats,whereastheotherstrainswerenot,oronlyslightly,neurovirulent.MHV1causednolesi
3、onsinweanlingrats.Theotherstrains(MHV2,MHV3andMHVA59)inducedpredominantlysubclinicalinfectionsinweanlingratsasdemonstratedbyanincreaseofantibodiesandinflammatorylesionsintheliver.Analysisofthesestrainsbycross-neutralizationrevealedvariabledegreesofantigenicrelationshipbetweenth
4、eseviruseswhichwerenotrelatedtotheirneurovirutence.However,whenthesestrainswerecomparedbyanalysingtheTt-RNase-resistantoligonucleotidesofvirionRNA,thehighlyneurovirulentstrainJHMwasfoundtodiffersignificantlyinitsnucleotidesequencefromtheotherless-neurovirulentstrains.INTRODUCTI
5、ONMurinecoronavirusesarewidespreadinnatureandcauseavarietyofdiseasesrangingfrominapparentinfectionstoacutediseasessuchashepatitis,enteritisandencephalomyelitis(Gledhill&Andrewes,1951;Nelson,1952;Dicketal.,1956;Manakeretal.,1961;Baileyetal.,1949;Cheereretal.,1949).Theoriginaliso
6、latesofmurinecoronaviruseswererecoveredfromdifferentmousestrainsand,sofar,animalexperimentstotesttheorgantropismofthesevirusesandtostudythepathogenicmechanismsbywhichthesestrainsinducediseaseshavemainlybeencarriedoutinmice(Lampertetal.,1973;Weiner,1973).Recently,however,ithasbe
7、enshowninweanlingratsthatthemurinecoronavirusJHMinducesdifferenttypesofcentralnervoussystem(CNS)diseasewhichcanbeaccompaniedbymarkeddemyelination(Nagashimaetal.,1978a,b,1979).Thisfindingledustoinvestigatetheorgantropismofanumberofothermurinecoronavirusesinrats.Theantigenicityan
