2、aveanexplorationofEnglisheuphemismsfromthepragmaticperspective.Euphemismsarerichanddiversified,whichcanreflectthecharacteristicsandlawsofalanguage.TheexistenceoftheEnglisheuphemismshouldabidebycertainprinciplesofthelanguage,whereastheirusedependslargelyonacontextandhasagreateffec
3、tondailycommunication.ThethesisfocusesonanalyzingpragmaticfeaturesoftheEnglisheuphemism,showingtherelationshipbetweentheeuphemismandpragmatics.Thoughviolatingtheco-operativeprinciples,theeuphemismiscloselyrelatedtotheindirectspeechacttheoryandrelevancetheory.Humancommunicationisc
4、onductedinaparticularcontext.Theeuphemism,asacommonlanguagephenomenon,iscloselyconnectedwithacontext.Acontextcaninfluencethechoiceandinterpretationofeuphemisms.Ifparticipantshaveathoroughunderstandingofthecontextanduseeuphemismsappropriately,communicationisunderstandableandcanbec
5、arriedoutsmoothly.Thenatureoftheeuphemismliesinitsindirectness,whichisreferredtoastheindirectspeechactbymanyresearchers.Thehighestcriterionofcommunicationisexactandtactful.Incommunication,languagestrategiesmustbecarriedoutinordertoprotectothers'andoneself’sface.Andtheuseoftheeuph
6、emismisoneofeffectivemethodsindeed.TheEnglisheuphemismchangesconstantlyanditsmeaningsaredominantlyinfluencedbysocialandpragmaticfactors.Therefore,forEnglishlearners,howtousetheEnglisheuphemismeffectivelyisofgreatimportanceincommunication.Usingtheeuphemismaccordingtothepragmaticco
