3、niversity,Linz,Austria,email:robert.bauer@jku.atAbstract.Sincethe1980s,therehasbeenagrowingbodyofcriticaltheoryininformationsystemsresearch.AcentraltheoreticalfoundationofthisresearchisHabermastheoryofcommunicativeaction,whichfocusesonimplicationsofspeech
4、andproposesgeneralnormativestandardsforcommunication.Habermasalsoplacesparticularemphasisontheimportanceofthepublicsphereinademocraticsociety,critiquingtheroleofthemediaandotheractorsinshapingpublicdiscourse.Whiletherehasbeengrowingemphasisoncriticaldisco
5、urseanalysis(CDA),therehasbeenlimitedefforttosystematicallyapplyHabermasvalidityclaimstoempiricalresearch.Moreover,whilecriticalresearchininforma-tionsystemshasexaminedcommunicationwithintheorganizationalcontext,publicdiscourseoninformationtechnologyhasre
6、ceivedlittleattention.Thepapermakesthreeprimarycontributions:(1)itrespondstoHabermascallforempiricalresearchtogroundandextendhistheoryofcommunicationineverydaycriticalpractice;(2)itproposesanapproachtoapplyingHabermastheoryofcommuni-cationtoCDA;and(3)itex
