2、eaidofit.Keywords:nonverbalcommunication,classroomEnglishteaching?I.IntroductionAsweknow,ouraimtoteachlanguage,especiallyaforeignlanguage,istoteachthestudentshowtouselanguagetocommunicatemoreeffectivelywithotherpeople.However,foralongtime,wehavelaidmuchemphasisont
3、hestudents’abilityofverbalcommunication,bothinoralandwrittenform,whileneglectingthatofnonverbalcommunication,anindispensablepartofcommunication.Infact,nonverbalcommunicationplaysanimportantroleinourdailycommunication.AccordingtoMehrabianandWeiner(1967,inGoss,1983:
4、44),thereisaformulatoshowtherelativeweightsthatverbalandnonverbalmessagesplayinexpressingaspeaker’sidea:speaker’sattitude=words(7%)+toneofvoice(38%)+facialexpression(55%).Thatistosay,over90%ofone’sattitudeiscommunicatednonverbally.Forthis,weshouldpayattentiontonot
5、onlywhatwesay,butalsohowwesay.AsEnglishteachers,wecanimproveourteachingandachievebetterresultsifwecanappropriatelyusenonverbalcommunicationinclassroomteaching.II.DefinitionandTypesofNonverbalCommunication2.1DefinitionofNonverbalCommunicationManyscholarshavegiventh
6、edefinitionofnonverbalcommunication.AsZeuschner(1997:80)putsit,nonverbalcommunicationreferstotheinformationthatistransmittedfromsenderstoreceiverswhenthedominantmeaningisnotconveyedbytheuseofwords.Italsomeansthatnonverbalcommunicationisyouruseofinteractingsetsofvi
7、sual,vocalandinvisiblecommunicationsystemstoconveyandinterpretmeaning(Leathers,1992,inZeuschner,1997:80).2.2TypesofNonverbalcommunicationGenerallyspeaking,thestudyofnonverbalcommunicationbehaviorcanbedividedintothreemainareas:paralanguage,kinesicsandproxemics.2.2.
